Question
How do I allow or restrict connections to the Wi-Fi network in my G54 gateway?
Answer
All Wi-Fi clients (such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets) are allowed to connect to the G54 Wi-Fi networks with the wireless password.  To increase security, configure the MAC Filtering feature to allow or restrict access Wi-Fi clients from connecting to the Primary or Guest Wi-Fi networks.  The MAC Filter default mode is Allow-All, where all Wi-Fi clients are allowed to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

There are 3 MAC Filtering modes:
  • Allow-All (Default mode) - All Wi-Fi clients are allowed to connect to the Wi-Fi network.
  • Allow - Add up to 16 Wi-Fi clients to a list to allow connection to the Wi-Fi network.
  • Deny - Add up to 16 Wi-Fi clients to a list to deny access to the Wi-Fi network.

Requirement

The Wi-Fi client device’s MAC address is required for this setup.  It can be obtained from the client's wireless information.

Setup Considerations:
  • It is recommended to set up the configuration with a device connected by Ethernet cable to the G54.
  • Wi-Fi clients added for Allow are required to use the Wi-Fi password to connect to the secured Wi-Fi network.

This document contains the following sections:

Deny Specific Clients to the Wi-Fi Network
Add Wi-Fi clients to the list to deny connection to the Wi-Fi network.  New Wi-Fi clients that are not on the deny list will be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.

  2. A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager.  There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager.  For instructions to bypass the alert screen, refer to article 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

NOTE: The Home Network Wizard will appear if this is the first time accessing the Web Manager.  For assistance with the wizard, refer to article 19497 - G54: Web Manager First Time Login.

  3. On the Login page, enter the custom password in the Password field.  The Username field is populated with admin.

NOTE: If the Username field is populated with an email address, retrieve the admin password from the SURFboard Central app to log in.  For detailed instructions in the app, refer to article 19069 - SURFboard Central: Web Manager Access.

Allow Specific Clients to Connect to the Wi-Fi Network
Add Wi-Fi clients to the list to allow connection to the Wi-Fi network.  New Wi-Fi clients cannot connect to the Wi-Fi network until the MAC address is added to the allowed list.  Include the Wi-Fi client's MAC Address that is performing this setup to the list to allow access to the Wi-Fi network.  This allows the Wi-Fi client back to the configuration page if needed.
