Question

How do I set my G54 into router mode?

Answer

The G54 operates as a DOCSIS Wi-Fi cable modem and provides Internet access through a coaxial connection. Setting the G54 in Router mode disables the modem functions and will operate as a Wi-Fi router. A modem with an Internet connection will need to be connected to the 10G Ethernet port on the G54. This document describes how to set up the G54 in router mode using the Web Manager.

Requirements

Internet service
Ethernet cable
Cable or DSL Modem, or Fiber ONT

Router Mode Setup

Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.
A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager. There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager. For instructions to bypass the alert screen, refer to article 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

NOTE: The Home Network Wizard will appear if this is the first time accessing the Web Manager. For assistance with the wizard, refer to article 19497 - G54: Web Manager First Time Login.
On the Login page, enter the custom password in the Password field. The Username field is populated with admin.

NOTE: If the Username field is populated with an email address, retrieve the admin password from the SURFboard Central app to log in. For detailed instructions in the app, refer to article 19069 - SURFboard Central: Web Manager Access.
Click the Login button. The Gateway > Summary page will appear.
In the upper-right-hand corner, click on the Internet link. The Gateway > Connection > WAN page will appear.
Click on the Edit button. The Gateway > Connection > WAN Configuration page will appear.
Under the WAN Interface Configuration section, click on the Change button.
Click the Ethernet radio button and click Save.

NOTE: The LED on the G54 will turn light blue when the G54 is in Router mode with an Internet connection. If the LED is flashing light blue, this indicates that the G54 is in Router mode without Internet.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem device or Fiber ONT to the 10 Gigabit Ethernet port of the G54.
Restart the modem device and the G54 for Internet access.
