MAC OS X: Locating the IP Address

Where do I find the IP address of my Macintosh computer?

There may be times in which the IP address of a Macintosh computer must be known.  Scenarios in which this information is used include connecting to a Macintosh machine, or for troubleshooting purposes.  This document describes how to locate the IP address of Macintosh computers with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) - Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) & 10.5 (Leopard)

1. Click the Apple icon on the upper left-hand corner.
2. Select System Preferences.  The System Preferences window appears.
   
   

 

• In the Internet & Wireless section of the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.  The Network window appears.
  
  

 

Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

• In the Network window, select Built-in Ethernet from the left-hand list.  The IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router (default gateway) will now appear.
  
  
  1. Click the Apple icon on the upper left-hand corner.
  2. Select System Preferences.  The System Preferences window appears.
     
     

 

• In the Internet & Wireless section of the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.  The Network window appears.
  
  

 

• In the Network window:
        a.  Location - Click the drop-down menu, and select Automatic.
        b.  Show - Click the drop-down menu, and select Built-in Ethernet.
        c.  Select the TCP/IP tab.  The IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router (default gateway) will now appear.
