How do I configure wireless QoS in my SBG6900-AC?
WiFi Multimedia is an advanced feature that allows the SBG6900-AC to prioritize various types of data traveling over the wireless network.  Certain types of data that are sensitive to delays, such as voice or video, must be prioritized ahead of others, less delay-sensitive types, such as email.

WiFi Multimedia currently implements wireless Quality of Service (QoS) by transmitting data depending on the priority settings.  These priorities are mapped into four Access Categories, in increasing order of priority:

  • Best Effort (AC_BE)
  • Background (AC_BK)
  • Video (AC_VI)
  • Voice (AC_VO)

The SBG6900-AC requires WiFi Multimedia (WMM)-capable clients, usually a separate feature enabled at the client network settings, and the client PC software that makes use of Differentiated Services (Diffserv).  Refer to the operating system instructions for enabling QoS.  This document describes how to enable and configure WMM.

To Enable WiFi Multimedia (QoS)
  1. Launch a Firefox or Safari browser.  Enter into the address box, and press the Enter key.  

    NOTE: A browser message on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera, may appear when accessing the Web Manager.  The message includes 192.168.01 uses an unsupported protocol and ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH.  The Web Manager uses an earlier version of the TLS protocol and does not match the version allowed by the web browser.  Safari browsers on Apple PC and mobile devices are not impacted.  The workaround to access the Web Manager with a PC is to use the Firefox browser and set the TLS version to 1.  For workaround instructions refer to article # 19435 - uses an unsupported protocol.

  2. A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager.  There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager.  For instructions to bypass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.
  3. On the Login page, enter admin or a customized username in the Username field.
  4. Enter password or a customized password in the Password field.

    NOTE: On later versions of the SBG6900-AC, the Wi-Fi Security Key is used as the default admin password printed on the bottom white label.  For assistance with Web Manager Access, refer to article # 18753 – SBG6900-AC: Web Manager Access.

  5. Click the Login button.  The Home page will appear.
    Right click on the image to save it to your computer.
  6. Move the mouse cursor over the Wireless tab and select the Quality of Service sub-link.  The Wireless - WMM Quality of Service page will appear.

    CAUTION: It is not recommended that these settings be modified without direct knowledge or instructions to do so. Modifying these settings inappropriately could seriously degrade network performance.
  7. On the Wireless - WMM Quality of Service page, WMM Support - Set WMM support to On, or Off.
  8. No-Acknowledgement - Set No-Acknowledgement to On or Off. When enabled, acknowledgment for data is not transmitted.
  9. Power Save Support - Set Power Save support to On or Off. When Power Save is enabled, the Access Point (AP) queues for packets for STAs are in Power Save mode.  Queued packets are transmitted when the station (STA) notifies AP that it has left the Power-Safe mode.
  10. Click the Apply button.
    NOTE: Transmit Parameters include Contention Window (CWmin and CWmax), Arbitration Inter Frame Spacing Number (AIFSN), and Transmit Opportunity Limit (TXOP Limit).
  11. EDCA AP Parameters - Specifies the transit parameters for traffic transmitted from the AP to STA.
    NOTE: Admission Control specifies if admission control is enforced for the Access Categories. Discard Oldest First specifies the discard policy for the queues.
  12. EDCA STA Parameters - Specifies the transit parameters for traffic transmitted from the STA to AP.
  13. EDCA TXOP Parameters - Specifies the transit parameters for traffic transmitted from TXOP.
  14. Click the Apply button.
