Question
How do I change the Wi-Fi channel in the SBG7580-AC?
Answer
When using a wireless connection, interference may occur.  One variable may include other Wireless Access Points within the surrounding area using the same wireless channel.  In order to reduce or eliminate wireless interference, change the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi channel in the SBG7580-AC by determining the Wi-Fi band of the affected Wi-Fi clients and then selecting the best available Wi-Fi channel.  By default, the SBG7580-AC is set at Auto channel.  This document describes how to change the Wi-Fi channel for the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

The connected Wi-Fi clients will temporarily lose Internet connection and reconnect when changing Wi-Fi channel.

Changing the Wi-Fi Band Channel
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.

NOTE: A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager. There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager. For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

  2. On the Login page, enter admin in the User Name field.

  3. Enter password or a customized password in the Password field.

NOTE: When using the default password to login, it may be required to set a unique password to proceed to the Web Manager.  For assistance with Web Manager Access, refer to article # 18248 – SBG7580-AC: Web Manager Access.

  4. Click the Apply button.  The Alert!! window will appear.

  6. On the System Basic Setup page, determine if the Wi-Fi client experiencing interference is connected to the Wireless 2.4 GHz or Wireless 5 GHz (SSID) by verifying the Wi-Fi Connection Status on the client.

  7. Once the SSID is determined click the More LAN Settings... link under the appropriate Wireless 2.4 GHz or Wireless 5 GHz section.   The System Basic Setup page will appear.

Change the Channel for the Wireless 2.4 GHz
  1. On the System Basic Setup page, select a channel from the Channel drop-down menu.  The Current channel is not displayed in this unit.

NOTE 1: It is recommended to leave the Channel default setting at Auto and restart the SBG7580-AC.  The best Wi-Fi channel will be selected upon restart.  Keep in mind that the connected Wi-Fi clients temporarily lose Internet connection when the SBG7580-AC is restarting.

NOTE 2: When choosing to set the Wi-Fi channel, it is recommended to set the channel to 1, 6 or 11 for better performance and stability because they do not overlap.  Other Wi-Fi channels overlap and degrade performance.

NOTE 3: Wi-Fi clients will briefly disconnect and reconnect.

  2. Click the Apply button.  The System Basic Setup page will refresh.
