How do I setup MAC Bridging on my SBG8300 Gateway?

Answer

MAC Bridging provides a mechanism for allowing devices on the Home network to have a direct connection to the WAN. A bridged device will get an IP address directly from the Internet provider and not have access to the local network. Residential customers may find this feature useful if running a Home Server, DMZ, Video-Over IP device, IoT device, or Gaming device. The implementation of MAC Bridging works similarly to IP Passthrough. This document describes how to setup a connected client as a MAC Bridge.

NOTE: Configuring a MAC Bridge will only provide Internet access to the specified client device. A second WAN IP address (Public IP address) may need to be purchased from the Service Provider.

Enable MAC Bridging

Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key. The https:// Redirect page will appear.
The SURFboard Web Manager is begin redirected to a more secure connection, click the Proceed button to continue. The Gateway > Login page will appear.
A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager. There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager. For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

NOTE: The Home Network Wizard will appear if this is the first time accessing the Web Manager. For assistance with the wizard, refer to article # 17969 - SBG8300: Web Manager First Time Login.
Enter admin in the Username field and enter the custom password in the Password field.

NOTE: If the Login page prompts for email address and password. Log into the Web Manager with the email and password used when setting up the SURFboard Manager app with the SBG8300.
Click the Login button. The Gateway > Summary page will appear.
On the left-hand menu, click the Advanced link then click the MAC Bridging sub-menu link. The Advanced > MAC Bridging page will appear.
The SBG8300 gateway will display Auto-Learned Devices on this screen, click the Add button to use a connected device as the MAC Bridge.
To set up a MAC Bridge for a Custom Device, enter the MAC Address of the client into the open text boxes. Click the Add button and the custom device will be included in the MAC Bridged Devices list.
After the Auto-Learned Device (or Custom Device) has been added to the MAC Bridged Devices list, the device can be configured to operate as the MAC Bridge on the SBG8300 network. Click the Enable button and the associated device will be set in MAC Bridging mode.
To remove the device from the list, click on the X. The Are You Sure? pop-up box will display, click OK to delete the device as a MAC Bridge.
