Question
How do I install my SBM1000 MoCA adapters with DirectTV Internet service?
Answer

The SBM1000 MoCA adapters consist of a SBM1100 adapter with one Ethernet port, and a SBM1400 that includes 4 Ethernet ports.  The SBM1000 MoCA adapters can be integrated with a home network that connects to DirecTV service.  The MoCA adapters are compatible for use with a broadband router or gateway.

This document contains the following sections:

Requirements

  • DirecTV service
  • Gateway or broadband router
  • Coaxial cable ports in home

Before Installation

  1. Before beginning the installation, verify that the following items are included with the SBM1000 MoCA Adapters.

  2. Determine if the DirecTV service is a SWIM or non-SWIM installation by doing the following:
    a.   Turn on the HD DVR (Digital Video Recorder).
    b.   Press the DASH button on the DirecTV remote control.  A message will display in the bottom right portion of the TV screen.

    • If the SWiM Connected message appears on the TV screen, proceed with the Installing with Single Wire Multi-Switch (SWiM) section of this document.
    • If the SWiM Connected message does not appear on the TV screen, proceed with the Installing without Single Wire Multi-Switch (SWiM) section of this document.

Installing with Single Wire Multi-Switch (SWiM)

  1. Identify the room with the Smart TV, as well as the room where the modem or gateway is located.  Make sure that there is a coaxial cable connection in both rooms.
  2. Verify that both of the MoCA adapters are powered off.
  3. Locate the cable wall outlet and electrical wall outlet in room with the Smart TV.
  4. Disconnect the coaxial cable from the In port of the Satellite receiver, and connect it to the In port on one of the RF splitters (included).
  5. Connect one of the coaxial cables (included) between the In port of the Satellite receiver and the OUT port on the RF splitter (included).  The OUT connector is identified by a red-colored insert and/or a red colored line from the IN to OUT ports.

CAUTION:  It is very important to follow step 5.

  6. Connect another coaxial cable (included) between the SBM1400 Coax In port and the other OUT connector on the RF splitter (included) which DOES NOT have the red-colored insert.
  7. Connect one of the Ethernet cables (included) between one of the Ethernet ports on the rear of the SBM1400 and the Ethernet/network port of the Smart TV.

NOTE:  Add additional Ethernet connections as required to other networked A/V devices.

  8. Connect one of the power adapters to the Power port on the back of the SBM1400.
  9. Plug the power adapter into the electrical wall outlet.
  10. Relocate to the room where the router or gateway is located.
  11. Disconnect the coaxial cable from the In port of the Satellite receiver and connect it to the In port on one of the RF splitters (included).

NOTE: If Room 2 does not include a Satellite receiver, then skip steps 12 and 13 below and connect a coaxial cable between the Satellite coaxial wall outlet and the SBM1100 Coax In port.

  12. Connect another coaxial cable (included) between the In port of the Satellite receiver and the OUT port on the RF splitter (included), which is identified by a red-colored insert.
  13. Connect another coaxial cable (included) between the SBM1100 Coax In connector and the OUT connector on the RF splitter (included) which DOES NOT have the red-colored insert.
  14. Connect one of the Ethernet cables (included) between one of the LAN Ethernet ports of the gateway/router and the Ethernet port on the back of the SBM1100.
  15. Connect the other power adapter to the Power port on the back of the SBM1100.
  16. Plug the power adapter into the electrical wall outlet.

NOTE:  The Coax LEDs on both MoCA adapters should turn ON within three minutes to indicate that a secure coaxial link was established between the two adapters.  If the Coax LED does not turn ON within four minutes, disconnect the power adapter from both MoCA adapters and then reconnect them.

Installing without Single Wire Multi-Switch (SWiM)

CAUTION: Ensure that the MoCA coax network is completely separate from the Satellite coax in the house.  Otherwise, Satellite Video performance will be degraded.

  1. Identify the room with the Smart TV, as well as the room where the modem or gateway is located.  Make sure that there is a coaxial cable connection in both rooms.
  2. Check to make sure the MoCA adapter is powered off.
  3. Locate the cable wall outlet or RF splitter and electrical wall outlet in the room with the Smart TV.
  4. Connect the coaxial cable (included) between the SBM1400 Coax In port and the RF port on the Cable Wall Outlet.
  5. Connect one of the Ethernet cables (included) between one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the SBM1400 and the Ethernet/network port on the Smart TV.

NOTE: Add Ethernet connections as required to other networked audio-visual devices.

  6. Connect one of the power adapters to the Power input on the back of the SBM1400.
  7. Plug the power adapter into the electrical wall outlet.
  8. Relocate to the room where the gateway/router is located.

NOTE: For Telco/DSL data services skip Steps 9, 10, and 11 of this procedure and refer to the Telco/DSL Network figure below. Connect one of the coaxial cables (included) between the SBM1100 Coax In connector and the Secondary coax wall outlet

  9. Disconnect the coaxial cable from the gateway, and connect it to the IN connector on one of the RF splitters (included).

NOTE: A MoCA POE filter may need to be placed between the gateway and the splitter to ensure there is no impact to normal operation.

  10. Connect another coaxial cable (included) between the SBM1100 Coax In port and one of the OUT ports on the RF splitter (included).
  11. Connect another coaxial cable (included) between the coaxial port on the gateway/router and the other OUT port on the RF splitter (included).
  12. Connect one of the Ethernet cables (included) between one of the LAN Ethernet ports of the gateway/router and the Ethernet port on the back of the SBM1100.
  13. Connect one of the power adapters to the Power input on the back of the SBM1100.
