Question
How do I add an additional SBX-AC1200P to the existing G.hn network?
Answer
The RipCurrent SBX-AC1200P is a Wi-Fi Network Extender that uses Gigabit home networking (G.hn) technology to extend the home network.  Additional SBX-AC1200P devices can be paired to the existing G.hn network (up to 15 G.hn devices can be supported on a G.hn network), to form a secure high-speed G.hn network.  By using the existing AC wiring and outlets throughout the home there’s no need to run additional cables.

The G.hn technology is more robust and provides better throughput and stability than previous home power line communication implementations.  G.hn communications are encrypted using the advanced standard AES 128-bit encryption for secure transmissions with data rates up to 1 Gbps (gigabits per second).

Requirement
  • Existing G.hn network with Cable Modem or G.hn enabled Router

Add New SBX-AC1200P to an Unencrypted G.hn Network
  1. Check the existing G.hn devices for solid red G.hn Pairing LED to confirm the G.hn network is unencrypted.

NOTE: If the G.hn Pairing LED is solid green, proceed to the Add New SBX-AC1200P to an Encrypted G.hn Network section.

  2. Plug the new SBX- AC1200P into an AC power outlet near the existing G.hn router or extender.

  3. Wait for the SBX-AC1200P front panel Primary LED to be green for boot up to complete.  After the boot up is complete, the G.hn Pairing LED flashes red when unencrypted pairing is in progress

CAUTION: It is not required to press the Pairing button for an unencrypted G.hn network as the extenders will automatically pair unencrypted.  If the Pairing button is pressed for less than 5 seconds on any of the G.hn devices, it will no longer be able to part of an unencrypted network until the G.hn Pairing has been reset to default.

  4. Check the side of the SBX-AC1200P for solid red G.hn Pairing LED to confirm unencrypted pairing is completed.

NOTE: If the G.hn pairing LED is off, reset the G.hn pairing to default on the SBX-AC1200P.  It is not required to perform factory reset on either devices.
    • SBX-AC1200P (Wi-Fi Extender) G.hn Paring Reset - Press and hold down the Pairing button for approximately 20 seconds.  Fast flashing red and green LED appears on the front panel during the G.hn pairing reset process and returns to normal after the G.hn pairing reset is completed.  On firmware version prior to 1.0.5-B05, the front panel LED flashes red multiple times after the Pairing button is released before returning to normal after the pairing reset is completed.

  5. Move the SBX-AC1200P to a location where there is weak or no Wi-Fi signal and plug it into an AC power outlet and wait for the front panel Primary LED to be green for boot up to complete.  It will reconnect to the unencrypted G.hn network.

NOTE: Connect to 3-prong grounded outlets for best performance of the G.hn network.  A 2-prong outlet will operate sufficiently but will provide a lower throughput speed.

  6. Check the side of the SBX-AC1200P for solid red G.hn Pairing LED.  If the G.hn Pairing LED is off, move the SBX-AC1200P into another AC power outlet to reconnect.

  7. Check the side of the SBX-AC1200P for flashing G.hn Signal Strength LED (color based on the G.hn signal speed).  If the signal strength is red or off, move the SBX-AC1200P into another AC power outlet to improve G.hn signal speed.

  8. Connect client device (PC, TV, Game Console, etc.) to the SBX-AC1200P for Internet access.  Use the included Ethernet cable to connect a wired client to the Ethernet port.  If RipCurrent router exists in the network, the SBX-AC1200P will broadcast the wireless network of the RipCurrent router allowing the existing wireless clients to automatically connect to it.

NOTE: If RipCurrent router doesn’t exist in the network, connect the wireless clients to the SBX-AC1200P using the default wireless name and password located on the back panel.

  9. Repeat step 2 - 8 to add additional G.hn extenders.

Add New SBX-AC1200P to an Encrypted G.hn Network
  1. Check the existing G.hn device for solid green G.hn Pairing LED to confirm the G.hn network is encrypted.

NOTE: If the G.hn Pairing LED is solid red, proceed to the Add New SBX-AC1200P to an Unencrypted G.hn Network section.

  2. Plug the new SBX-AC1200P into an AC power outlet near the existing G.hn router or extender and wait for the front panel Primary LED to be green for boot up to complete.

NOTE: When adding multiple new G.hn extenders, add them one a time.  The new G.hn extenders should not be plugged into an AC power outlet until the previous device has successfully paired with the encrypted network.

  3. On the existing G.hn device, press and hold the Pairing button for 3 to 4 seconds to initiate encrypted pairing.  When the button is released, the G.hn Pairing LED flashes green for 2 minutes to look for new G.hn devices to pair with.

  4. Wait a minimum of 5 seconds, then press and hold the Pairing button on the bottom of the SBX-AC1200P for 3 to 4 seconds.  When the button is released, the G.hn Pairing LED flashes green indicating that the encrypted pairing in progress.

NOTE: Pairing process takes up to 2 minutes to complete.  At the end of the pairing process, the Pairing LED may go out for about 10 seconds and then come back on again.

  5. Check the side of the SBX-AC1200P for solid green G.hn Pairing LED to confirm encrypted pairing is completed.

NOTE: If the G.hn pairing LED is off, reset the G.hn pairing to default on the SBX-AC1200P.  It is not required to perform factory reset on either devices.
    • SBX-AC1200P (Wi-Fi Extender) G.hn Pairing Reset - Press and hold down the Pairing button for approximately 20 seconds.
