Question
How do I configure Band Steering on the Gateway?
Answer
NOTE: This article applies to the SURFboard Wi-Fi Cable Modems (G18, G20, G34, G36, G54, SBG10, SBG6950AC2, SBG7400AC2, SBG7580-AC, SBG7600AC2, SBG8300).

Band Steering periodically checks Wi-Fi devices connected to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band and steers them to faster available 5 GHz or 6 GHz bands.  The Wi-Fi clients may experience a brief interruption when they are being steered.  Band Steering requires the Wi-Fi network to share the same (SSID) and Wi-Fi password across the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz networks.  This document describes how to disable and enable Band Steering using the Web Manager.

Enable Band Steering
  1. Tap the My Network icon at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tap the Network Management box.

  3. Tap the Main Wi-Fi Network + button to expand the card, then swipe the Enable single SSID for 2.4G/5G bands to the right.

    NOTE: Certain models broadcast unique SSIDs on each Wi-Fi radio and require enabling Single-SSID to enable Band Steering.

  4. The changes are taking effect.

  5. Tap the Join button to connect to the new single-SSID.

  6. The Enable single SSID for 2.4G/5G bands is now enabled and the 5GHz and 2.4GHz tabs are removed.  Under the Network Name (SSID) heading, the single SSID is listed.

  7. Tap the Network Settings + button to expand the card, then swipe the Enable Wi-Fi Band Steering option to the right.

  8. The settings are taking effect.

  9. Enable Wi-Fi Band Steering is now enabled.  Connect all Wi-Fi clients to the single network SSID.

Disable Band Steering
  1. Tap the My Network icon on the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tap the Network Management box.

  3. Tap the Network Setting + button to expand the card, then swipe the Enable Wi-Fi Band Steering to the left.

  4. The changes are taking effect.

  5. Tap the Join button to connect back to the Wi-Fi network.

    NOTE: Wi-Fi clients in the network will lose wireless connection.

  6. Enable Wi-Fi Band Steering is now disabled.

  7. Tap the Main Wi-Fi Network + button to expand the card, then swipe the Enable single SSID for 2.4G/5G bands to the left.

  8. The settings are taking effect.

  9. Enable single SSID for 2.4/5G bands is now disabled and both 5GHz and 2.4GHz tabs are back.  Connect the Wi-Fi clients to the respective SSID.
