Question
How do I setup the Gateway to have a custom DNS?
Answer
NOTE: This article applies to the SURFboard Wi-Fi Cable Modems (G18, G20, G34, G36, G54).

DNS Setup Domain Name Server (DNS) is a database that contains domain host names (e.g. http://www.surfboard.com) which are linked to a specific IP address.  When accessing a website by domain name like www.surfboard.com, the DNS retrieves the IP address to access the website.  DNS makes it possible to access the websites by domain names.

The DNS settings can be customized when using public DNS or installing private DNS in a home network.  This document describes how to setup custom DNS addresses.

CAUTION: By default, the Gateway obtains DNS addresses automatically from the service provider.  Internet connection may be lost if the DNS addresses inputted in the app are invalid.

NOTE 1: Wi-Fi clients in the network will lose wireless connection.  If the Wi-Fi clients do not reconnect when the Gateway is back online manually reconnect them in the Wi-Fi setting of the device.

NOTE 2: To revert back to using the Service Provider DNS addresses, tap the Automatic radio button.  Repeat steps 8 - 10.
