Answer | NOTE:Â This article applies to the mAX W21, W121, W122 Express, W30, W130, W31, W133, W61, and the W161 Routers.
The mAX routers can be used as Wi-Fi extenders by enabling bridge mode. This is an ideal setup to install a Mesh Wi-Fi network to an existing router or Wi-Fi cable modem. As a result, routing functionality is disabled on the mAX unit and mesh functionality is limited. Â
Wi-Fi clients connected to the Wi-Fi network (SSID) of the bridged mAX routers will be part of the primary network managed by the existing router or Wi-Fi cable modem.Â
This document contains the following sections:Â
Requirements:
- Existing router or Wi-Fi Cable Modem with active Internet Service.
- Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone or Android device.
- The SURFboard Central app is downloaded onto the mobile device.
- Power on only one mAX Router at a time during the first time setup.
Setup Considerations:
- Initial installation must be performed on all mAX units to configure bridge mode. Â
- Up to 3 mAX units can be installed. Multiple mAX units are needed for the Mesh Wi-Fi network.
- DO NOT bridge the mAX units when there's only a cable modem in the network. mAX unit will need to be in router mode to create and manage the home network.Â
- mAX unit is not compatible with other Mesh Wi-Fi networks.
First Time Installation
- Download the SURFboard Central app from the app store on an Apple or Android mobile device. Â
    - Tap the SURFboard icon then tap the Get Stated button.Â
 - In the next few screens, tap the Allow button to access the Location and other services of the mobile device. It is required to use the SURFboard Central app to perform first-time setup installation. For more information on the location services or to change the Location Service in the mobile device settings, refer to article # 18476 - SURFboard Central: Location Services.Â

NOTE: For the Mesh System with two mAX routers, either of the routers can be used to connect to the existing router or Wi-Fi cable modem with the exception of the W161. The W161 labeled as Main Router on the back must connect to the home router device.  - Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled WAN in yellow on the bottom of the mAX Router and plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into one of the LAN Ethernet ports of the router or Wi-Fi cable modem.Â
NOTE: To avoid Wi-Fi interference, it is recommended to disable the Wi-Fi network on the existing router or Wi-Fi cable modem or place the mAX unit far away as possible.  - Starting from the Let's setup your network screen, tap the Next button until the Setup Information screen appears.
