How do I change the default admin login password in my SBG6580 Gateway?

Answer

Firmware version 8.9.0.4 and later includes a new feature to change the default admin password when logging into the Web Manager. The default admin login credential is admin (username) and motorola (password). If the admin login password is at default, the Change User Password screen prompt appears to change the admin password. It is required to change the admin password before access to the Web Manager.

If logging into the Web Manager with the customized admin password is unsuccessful, the only option is to perform a factory reset on the SBG6580 to login with the default admin password. Performing a Factory Reset will erase any configuration changes that have been made and will require the gateway to be reconfigured. For instructions on how to do a factory reset, please refer to Answer # 8878 - SBG6580 (v8.5.x) Factory Reset.

This document describes how to change the default admin credential during login to the Web Manager.

Prompt to Change Default Admin Credentials

Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key. The Login page will appear.
On the Login page, enter admin in the Username field.
Enter motorola in the Password field then click the Login button. The Change User Password window will appear.
Enter admin in the Enter Username field and motorola in the Enter Current Password field.
Enter a new password in the Enter New Password field and re-enter the new password in the Re-Enter New Password field.

NOTE: On firmware version 8.9.0.4 and later, the password strength indicator will display Weak or Strong next to the Enter New Password field.

Password Requirements:
- Minimum of 8 characters
- At least one uppercase alpha character
- At least 1 number
- One of ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * ( ) - _ = + [ ] { } | ; : , . / ?
Click the Apply button. The Home screen will appear. The new admin password will take effect immediately.
